DVDs On-Demand, Now With Encryption
TitleMatch Entertainment Group in conjunction with Sonic Solutions recently announced that their DVD On-Demand system will now sport Content Scramble System (CSS) encryption. The DVD On-Demand system is designed to take the “Is it in stock?” question out of DVD retail. The system allows customers visit a retailer and ask for a copy of a particular movie and be sure to get it whether the actual DVD is in stock or not. This is because the DVD will be custom burned for them right there in the store.
This solution also works for e-tailers, on whose Web sites consumers can create a customized DVD. In person, a customer can browse a multi-media touch-screen display terminal on the sales floor for the same purpose.
The addition of CSS to the mix is likely to encourage more involvement from studios wary of licensing content without a guarantee of copyright protection.
