Two retail advisors worried about manufacturers emerging as competition. "We have terrific relationships with our vendors," Rachelle Friedman, co-founder of J&R Music and Computer World, said. "But some of them want to start becoming our competition…."
She noted that in addition to operating their own e-commerce Web sites, vendors will promote those sites via products sold at retail—inside CDs or on packaging, for example. "Sometimes they withhold product that only they will sell directly," she said.
