EarthLink Scaling Back Municipal Wi-Fi Plans
EarthLink indicated last week that it is having second thoughts about its plans to expand municipal Wi-Fi service into more cities, the AP reported Monday.
The company’s CEO, Kevin Dotts, said last week that lackluster earnings have caused the company to focus on driving up usage in existing markets, as opposed to expanding into new cities.
Earthlink has wireless networks set up in Philadelphia, New Orleans, Anaheim, and Milpitas, Calif., and has plans underway, or under consideration, to install networks in several other cities, including Houston, San Francisco and Chicago. Dotts said the company plans to “study” how the current networks are performing before committing to further expansion, the AP reported.
