EchoStar Buys Sling Media
In a surprise move, Sling Media, maker of the “place-shifting device” the Slingbox, has agreed to be acquired by satellite provider EchoStar Communications, the AP reported. The deal is for $380 million, and is expected to close by year’s end.
EchoStar already held a minority stake in Sling, and was an original investor in the company, which has always been privately held.
The acquisition, oddly enough, comes just days after Sling agreed with EchoStar’s rival, DirecTV, to make NFL football broadcasts available on the Web. The status of that deal is yet to be determined.
