The Government’s Three Card Monte
All of us need to pay attention to a number of national issues, including “card check” legislation and cap & trade legislation that will affect your business and livelihood. But how active are you at a local level? Are you fighting to keep that bureaucratic hand out of your pocket, which is taking your hard-earned cash?
Despite how busy you are managing all the above, you need to find time to research what your city council or county supervisors have planned for you. With municipalities in need of money to justify their existence, they are looking at any source of revenue they can. This includes jacking up parking fees at public lots and meters. If you’re a store owner where customers pay for parking, you must ask yourself how this will affect your business. How can you allow this to happen? Some places in Los Angeles charge $5 an hour for parking meters. You can park cheaper at some airports!
I would venture to say that for every dollar you have found to cut out of your operational costs, a government agency has found a way to take from you a good chunk of that savings. When you look at your profit margins, make certain you include the cost of doing business both internally and externally to your spreadsheet. Your cost of sales must include government fees and regulations.
