Going the Way of the Dinosaurs
All of the retailers I speak with tell me that they are doing better and are actually ahead of last year. If you recall, last year retail sales were off in some areas of the country by as much as 40 percent. So I certainly hope they are ahead of last year! If you are not ahead of last year's performance, you are out of business but simply do not know it yet.
Please don't tell me about how many tweets you do a month or how many fans you have on Facebook. I know it is cheap to do these things and I still strongly believe this will be a marketing factor for the car electronics industry somewhere in the not-too-distant future. For now, however, you have two things going against you with social media promotions: first, all you are doing now is preaching to the choir and second, UNLESS YOU BEGIN REAL MARKETING AND PROMOTING TO THE CONSUMER, YOUR CATEGORY WILL DIE!
The major issue for mobile electronics manufacturers, and the reason many will soon be added to the endangered species list, is a simple lack of promotional activity. Many would argue that there is no new "next big thing" but there are incredible consumer benefits and feature-laden products on the market today. And no one is talking about it.
