Going the Way of the Dinosaurs
Finally, in-dash navigation sales remain inadequate to sustain the cost of production despite their climb to a higher traffic volume price point.
Panasonic exited the entire category in the U.S. a few years ago and it appears Sony is smart enough not to concern itself with in-dash navigation-at least until the numbers begin to justify it. The problem here is a crack in the technology retail bell curve, which states that technology follows the path of a bell shaped curve, moving from early adaptors to mass acceptance and then to commodity.
Disruptive technologies have entered the picture with their own curve that have basically been laid atop the traditional car stereo curve. They have now effectively begun to suck the rest of the curve out of its host. Consumers are flying to portable technology like bees to a soda can in the summertime.
