Elle’s Wireless Wish List is an attempt to link the the ads in Elle magazine to the products on retailers’ shelves using a camera phone as the bridge. In this service, due to launch with the October 2006 issue, readers would see an ad in Elle they liked, photograph it using their cellphone and then be invited to log in to their Wireless Wish List online (they also have the option of text messaging the brand name to EWISH). Entering their phone number at this point would give them access to all the ads they’ve selected so far, including information on the nearest retailer for each item, where to find the selected products online and information on sales, discounts and special events. Elle is launching a sweepstakes as an incentive to join the program in which the winner receives $2500 towards the items on their Wireless Wish List. Carol Smith, ELLE senior VP/group publisher explains, “When [a customer] is ready to purchase or wants to forward her list to friends and family, the where-to-buy information is already gathered. What could be better?”
