Even though Hollywood and the consumer electronics industry are gearing up to give Blu-ray Disc technology a major push this holiday season, some are worried that the state of the economy may make such efforts more difficult- but are ultimately optimistic that the technolog will gain in popularity.
According to a story in the Hollywood Reporter Thursday that reported on a panel discussion this week, executives with Disney and Fox are concerned that the economy could hurt efforts at greater Blu-ray adoption. That's because adopting Blu-ray also requires purchasing an HDTV, cable, software and other components. In today's economy, getting consumers to purchase is a challenge, even with prices dropping.
However, the executives interviewed, including Disney home entertainment executive Lori MacPherson and Fox research and technology executive Danny Kate, expressed optimism that Blu-ray will make progress this holiday season.
