Convergence Connections: FLO TV and Discovery; Verizon and Boingo
Deals that bring together vendors from different segments to enhance customer experiences are bubbling up again. Two of the latest such alliances - what I call "interspecies breeding" - showed up last week.FLO TV, the Qualcomm company expanding its mobile video service, signed a deal with Discovery Communications to create a dedicated channel that will feature full-length programs from Discovery's popular "Shark Week" series for the next two weeks. Separately, Verizon expanded its relationship with Boingo Platform Services, which provides Wi-Fi hotspot networks. The alliance, which will run through 2013, will allow Verizon DSL and FiOS customers to get free Wi-Fi from most of the U.S. Boingo hotspots. Demonstrating how complex these deals can be: the relationship is with the parent (wireline) Verizon company - not Verizon Wireless. Expect Verizon Wireless customers who are not Verizon DSL or FiOS customers to be confused.
