Format War Footnote: Toshiba Paid Paramount
Months after the end of the hi-def DVD format war, one persistent mystery of the battle appears to have been solved.
According to a piece in Variety last Friday, a recently released earnings report from Viacom, the parent company of Paramount, confirms that the studio’s brief shift from format neutrality to HD DVD exclusivity last August was the result of a direct payoff.
Variety named the amount, which came from HD DVD backer Toshiba, as $29 million, a sum that helped the company post a 22 percent increase in home entertainment revenue for that quarter. The payoff, long-rumored, had never before been officially confirmed, though it is uncertain if more payments were scheduled for the future.
