Format War Over? Paramount Denies Report Of a Blu-ray Flip
Just seven days ago, prognosticators were wondering whether the hi-def DVD format war would continue through the end of 2008. As it turns out, it may barely last through January.
Three days after Warner Bros. shocked the industry by abandoning its neutrality and going exclusively with Blu-ray, reports surfaced early Tuesday that Paramount had switched to Blu-ray as well, a move that would likely have ended the war immediately. However, later on Tuesday morning Bloomberg News quoted a Paramount spokeswoman as saying that the company’s “current plan” is to stick with HD DVD. The Financial Times had earlier reported that Paramount was “poised” to make the switch. That paper also reported that Paramount had an escape clause in its deal with HD DVD that would allow it to switch sides if Warner did.
Even if Paramount (and Universal) hold out, the Blu-ray side is already in control of around 70 percent of releases.
