From COMDEX to CES
Also in PDAs, Xircom has a new REX PDA. The REX 6000 MicroPDA replaces the original REX, which received criticism for being hard to use. Improvements to the new model include a touch-screen interface and a USB cradle for syching to the PC.
Internet and e-mail appliances will also be on tap at CES. Cidco will show three new SKUs of its rebranded version of the MailStation, an e-mail only device. The MailStation will still be available at $99.99 with a $9.95 monthly service fee. The first new device will be the Mivo 200, a redesign of the MailStation that will send and receive e-mail and provide daily Yahoo! content updates. The 200 will retail for $129.99 with a $12.95 monthly service fee. The Mivo 300 will have added functionality, such as customized Web content and the ability to view images, albeit on a monochrome screen. The 300 will retail for $179 with a monthly service fee of $14.95. In 2000, Cidco reported that it had 70,000 subscribers to its service, over half of whom reported having existing e-mail accounts prior to purchasing the Cidco device and service.
The company also noted that a large portion of its customers were women. Subsequently, the company decided to more actively market to this demographic.
