While there have been reports that game sales slowed down in the last quarter – more the stage was being set for a good holiday season. Gaming at retail remains a big business. In 2009 purchases for new retail games at retail topped $10.5 billion, according to the market research group NPD.
But NPD also reported more optimistic news because when it added used video games, rentals, subscriptions, digital full game downloads, downloadable content, and mobile game applications to the mix, the number jumped to an estimated $4.5 to $4.75 billion in additional revenue – for a total in the $15 billion range.
Computer and video game playing is widespread, with 67 percent of American households penetration, according to new research from the Entertainment Software Association (ESA).
