GE Launches First Apple HomeKit-Enabled Air Conditioners
Temperature control in the age of the smart home has, until this point, been relegated towards those abodes that are fortunate enough to have a central air conditioning system installed. Now, that’s a large number of homes for potential smart thermostat users—95 percent of newly completed homes have central air, according to Statista—but there are still a large number of living quarters in this country that utilize a window-based air conditioning unit. The same data source recently reported that a little more than 5 million air conditioning units were shipped in the U.S. in 2017.
And now, thanks to newly developed products from GE Appliances, consumers have a few different smart home-ready, ENERGY STAR-compliant air conditioning options that could work for them. The company announced this week the availability of its first Apple HomeKit-enabled air conditioning units.
“We’re pleased to offer the very first air conditioners with HomeKit integration, bringing simple and secure control through the Apple Home app and using Siri,” John Desmarais, Commercial Director, Window A/C, Portables & Dehumidifiers for GE Appliances, said in a statement. “We are confident owners will find the convenience at the tip of their fingers.”
