$4.8 billion in gift cards will go unused this year, according to figures reported by compliance and risk management consulting firm Keane Co. to the AP. Best Buy alone reported $43 million in revenue from unclaimed gift cards in 2006. Regardless, the National Retail Federation estimates $18.48 billion in gift card sales this holiday season, according to a survey released in November. This is a 6.6 percent increase over 2004’s results in a similar survey. 15.6 percent, or $88.03, of an average consumer’s gift budget will be devoted to gift cards. But then, about 6 percent of those cards will, presumably, be forgotten or misplaced by their recipients.
