Retail Turns a Corner
Keith Saunders, district manager & electronics buyer, Queen City Audio Video & Appliances, Charlotte, N.C.: Sales dollars were flat to a little above last year, and profitability is looking better. There were no shining stars in terms of categories. LCD panels kept us busy, as well as larger TVs 46 inches and up; 32-inch has been good, too.
Dealerscope: What's the most important change or strategy you implemented during the last year to improve your business?
Krieger: Because we're a department store, we emphasize many businesses. With the electronics business, we've just re-established ourselves as the place to go. A year ago, in August, we filed bankruptcy and came out of it in December, and that probably hurt our credibility a little in terms of customer confidence. It's taken a while, but we've overcome that, and we fully service everything we sell. We've reinforced our professional, commissioned sales force and our own in-house service operation.
