Android Takes Smartphone Lead
Google's Android operating system has ridden the popularity of several new devices to new status as the #1 mobile operating system in the U.S., NPD Group reported Wednesday.
The research firm found that Android is on 33 percent of smart phones sold in the second quarter, ahead of Research in Motion's BlackBerry (28 percent) and Apple's iPhone (22 percent.) BlackBerry had held the lead in every quarter of the survey since 2007.
In terms of carriers, Verizon maintains its lead with 33 percent of the total U.S. mobile phone market, followed by AT&T 25 percent), Sprint (12 percent) and T-Mobile (11 percent.)
