Google Officially Unveils NFC Wallet
Google Thursday officially announced its Google Wallet near-field communication-based mobile payment system. The product will run tests in New York and San Francisco with a full launch scheduled for July.
Citi, MasterCard, First Data and Sprint are among the initiative's launch partners. The user's phone can also be swiped at existing PayPass locations.
"Today, we've joined with leaders in the industry to build the next generation of mobile commerce," Stephanie Tilenius, vice president, commerce and payments for Google, said as part of the announcement. "With Citi, MasterCard, First Data and Sprint we're building an open commerce ecosystem that for the first time will make it possible for you to pay with an NFC wallet and redeem consumer promotions all in one tap, while shopping offline."
