Handset Rivals Prepare For 3G iPhone Era
What will rival phone manufacturers and carriers do when the 3G iPhone makes is debut on AT&T next month? According to an analysis in BusinessWeek this week, expected changes include more subsidies from carriers, as well as slimmer margins.
The new iPhone, which will both feature more consumer-friendly and business-friendly features, faster connections speeds, and a price tag considerably lower than its predecessors, is expected to cut into the market share and margins of its rivals, from BlackBerry to Nokia.
As a result, rival carriers to AT&T, which carries the iPhone exclusively, are expected to increase subsidies, as AT&T has done, while phone manufacturers are expected to develop products meant to compete head-to-head with the iPhone.
