Where are they going to use it and do they travel to fringe areas? That will eliminate a lot of different carriers. If people say they would only use it within the city limits, and they want a bunch of minutes for their dollar, then that would point to the digital carriers. It seems like most customers are relying on their wireless phones for long distance rather than their landline phone.
Then I ask them about their cosmetic needs or their feature needs—do they need a vibrate option, voice activated dialing, an extensive battery life?
It's better customer service when you qualify them and not just try to sell them what pays you the most.
