Harman, XM Veteran Acker Dies at 49
Robert Acker, a longtime 12 volt industry executive who spent time with XM, RealNetworks, Aha Mobile and Harman International, passed away this week at the age of 49. A San Jose Mercury News report said a man found unresponsive near a jogging trail in Redwood City, Calif. was identified Thursday as Acker.
An MIT and Harvard Business School graduate whose careers included executive, entrepreneur and, yes, rocket scientist, Acker since March had served as president and CEO of Seek Thermal, which develops thermal imaging technology in order to enable consumers to "see heat."
Starting in 2008 Acker had led the startup Aha Mobile, Inc., which he sold to Harman in 2010; Acker then remained with Harman, as vice president of connectivity and head of the Aha division, until earlier this year. Prior to that, Acker was the first employee of XM Satellite Radio, starting in 1997. His first job had been as vice president of Aurora Flight Sciences Corporation.
