In Format War, HD DVD Strikes Back
Is Blu-ray starting to pull away in the high-def DVD format war? Not so fast, says Toshiba, the company behind rival HD DVD.
“If you look at some of the press releases flying around lately, you’d think that HD DVD is ready to pack up our tent and go home. Suffice to say, we’re not goin’ anywhere,” the author of an e-mail newsletter from Toshiba vowed on Tuesday, citing several statistics to show HD DVD is still in the game.
For one thing, the author writes, even though Blu-ray has claimed more of the market share each of the last few months, HD DVD still holds the overall lead, perhaps due to its several-month head start. In addition, HD DVD claimed in the letter that due to Blu-ray’s Playstation 3-abetted five-to-one hardware advantage, the Toshiba player actually sells more discs per player.
