Circuit City Accepting HD DVD-for-Blu-ray Exchanges
Since the hi-def DVD format war ended, many HD DVD owners wondered how they would be “made whole,” after guessing wrong in their early adoption choice. One retailer is, very quietly, stepping in to just that.
According to multiple reports Wednesday, Circuit City has begun offering a Blu-ray Disc player in exchange for HD DVD players, even if the latter player was purchased months ago. The Web site Gizmodo.com produced an internal memo from the company stating that Circuit City would be “happy to offer an exchange for a Blu-ray player (customer plays any difference in purchase price) - even if it has been several months since the customer made their HD DVD player purchase.” Customers still end up paying, as nearly every Blu-ray player is more expensive than every HD DVD player.
The company, however, has done no promotion at all for the offer. It does not apply to HD DVD movies, only to players, and is offered only at stores and not on the company’s Web site.
