HD DVD Teeters: Two Remaining Studios Reportedly Wavering
With Warner Bros. abandoning neutrality in the high-definition DVD format war, the last two studios backing HD DVD are reportedly ready to jump ship as well. According to a report on Daily Variety, the trade paper has “confirmed” that Universal has abandoned its exclusive commitment to HD DVD, and that the alliance of Paramount and DreamWorks Animation, despite denials earlier this week, does indeed have an escape clause that would allow it to back away from HD DVD.
The war is not entirely over, however, as Universal has committed to release and promote several HD DVD titles in the coming months, as does Paramount. Blu-ray would like not be declared the official victor until HD DVD’s main technological backer, Toshiba, gives up and stops supporting the format. The company has expressed no indications that it plans to do so.
