Heading to SXSW? Book Your Hotel Fast. Rates are Skyrocketing.
For those of you still considering whether or not you want to venture to the Texan capital later this week—and for those of you who are already registered but have procrastinated on booking a hotel room—you might want to consider something on Airbnb, or perhaps just sleeping in your rental car.
A new survey from CheapHotels.org released today found that hotel rates in Austin are shooting through the roof as the South by Southwest festival nears. The annual interactive music and media conference runs from March 11 through March 20, and as of right now, hotels are increasing their rates by over 200 percent, on average, during the festival’s run dates.
According to the survey, hotel rooms in downtown Austin during the first five days of the event are basically sold out. The rooms that remain? They’re going for roughly $700 per night or more. Closer to the airport in Austin South, more rooms are available (rated at least 3 stars), but even those are going for close to $300 per night. Elsewhere, in North Central and Northwest Austin, rooms are going for $250 and $200 a night, respectively.
