Hitachi Enters Ultra Thin Display LCD Category
Hitachi will soon be joining Toshiba, Sharp and others by introducing a line of ultra-thin display LCD TVs. Ultra thin displays, or UTDs as the industry is starting to call them, are the latest trend in the flat panel TV market and are a way to allow both manufacturers and dealers the ability to offer premium, higher-margin products to offset the trend of low margin, low price flat panels.
The new LCD panels will will be available in 32-, 37 and 42-inch screen sizes and will be only 1.5-inches thick. The products will hit the Japanese market in December of this year, and the US market in Q1 of 2008 as part of the Director Series and be available through CEDIA dealers and specialty AV dealers.
VP of Marketing Daniel Lee said during a conference call from Japan that UTDs will be the next big category, “and we want to be the first movers.”
