This is how The Buccaneer came to be: three recent college graduates decided they could make a better 3D printer. “The idea was very spur-of-the-moment,” said co-founder Brendan Goh. “We just thought this looks cool, we can do a better one, so we did.”
Goh, and co-founders of Pirate 3D Roger Chang, Kok Ben Neo and You Yun Sang, launched their 3D printer The Buccaneer on Kickstarter inJune and raised $1.4 million in 30 days (the goal was $100,000).
New, innovative consumer electronics products are being launched on Kickstarter as start-ups eschew a more traditional funding-to-retail path. Inventors want to maintain control of their creations and develop direct relationships with their market demographic. But where does that leave the CE industry?
