Atul Vir, president of Equator Advanced Appliances, which sells the small-appliance brand Equator and, under that label, the unique Super Combo washer/dryer, serves this and other niche markets with products that push the envelope in consumer customization with each new generation.
Vir says his is “an ‘American dream’ story.” It is certainly a story of successful entrepreneurism – and of how to fill an unmet market need with a specially tailored solution.
The idea for marketing a combination compact washer/dryer in the U.S. was sparked at the time he moved here from England, where his family had owned such a system. They soon discovered that if you lived in an apartment with no room for full-size washers and dryers, “in this country, it took a half-day – you had to block our part of your weekend – to use coin-operated laundry machines. That piqued my interest. I did research and found one company willing to develop a small combination washer-dryer and got UL approval.”
