Steaming barista-brewed coffee, catered hors d’œuvres and the booming, climatic ship battle scene in “Pirates of the Caribbean At World’s End”? Also beneficial for passing a Wednesday evening during the Great Recession of 2009—at least that’s what hundreds of customers decided by pouring into the after-hours party that was Definitive Audio’s Home Theater Experience event this summer.
Earlier this year, leaders at the Seattle-area CE retail operation had briefly considered changing the format of their annual two-day event, nicknamed CES of the West, which spotlights emerging high-end A/V technologies. They wondered if customers would be as willing to come out and see premium projectors and audio systems this year, when unemployment numbers are at a 25-year high and expendable income is guarded closer than ever.
