With all we’ve been learning about HDTV and new technologies, it is rare to find a sales associate who confidently, comfortably and concisely can explain resolution and what makes one TV better than the other. I’ve heard misinformation and lots of hesitation—the former being a disservice to the customer, the latter resulting in a lost sale or nervous customer. Through my years of experience, research and conversations with the inventors of high definition, I offer you some simple ways to explain resolution and debunk some misinformation.
How do you talk to the average customer about HDTV resolution without watching their eyes glaze over in a frenzy of acronyms and numbers like EDTV, SDTV, 1080i, 720p? And how do you explain the benefits of the newest arrival, “1080p”? Can’t you say “1080p is a better picture quality” and just be done with it? Sure, but if you take away the customer’s nagging unspoken questions of “why” and “how” it will create rapport that will ultimately end in a sale.
Just as you don’t want to merely say “it’s better,” you don’t want to get involved in a lengthy technical response—particularly with those who are confused by technology.
