In spite of a rocky year, HP has something to celebrate at the end of Q3 2006. For the first time since 2003, the company has the largest PC market share in the industry, surpassing Dell by .2 percent. According to iSuppli results for Q3, HP shipped 9.86 million PCs, a year-to-year increase of 16.7 percent. This far exceeds the growth of their closest rival, Dell, who maintains a 16.3 percent market share against HP’s 16.5.
It has not been as profitable a quarter for Dell, whose shipments are down 1.9 percent from Q2. Says Matthew Wilkins, principal analyst with iSuppli, “The U.S. market caused some challenges for Dell. HP was less affected by these challenges due to its strong presence in other regions.”
Lenovo, Acer and Toshiba placed third, fourth and fifth, respectively, in iSuppli’s ranking of the top five PC makers in Q3.
