I always say there are a lot of things they can do. But the best answer is based on the combination of three things: Aggressiveness, Sweat and Benefits.
Retailers must become more aggressive in marketing their business in effective, efficient ways. One of the best ways is to use the magic words: Who do you know? Every customer you have knows someone who needs and wants your products and services. All you have to do is be aggressive and ask. It does not cost a cent to ask and you will get great leads. Make sure to refer to the customer's name when calling the lead.
