IDC Sees Phone Growth, Windows Surge
The smartphone market will grow nearly 50 percent worldwide this year over last year, as global shipments of the devices will exceed the 450 million mark in 2011.
That's according to numbers released Tuesday by research firm IDC. The market will grow 49.2 percent this year over 2010, rising from 303.4 million to more than 450 million.
IDC also said that Android will become the top smartphone platform this year and surprisingly, predicted that Microsoft's Windows Phone operating system will become #2 in the world to Android by 2015. This, the firm said, is due to Nokia's recent deal with Microsoft and the Finnest handset giant's market share position worldwide.
