When IKEA and Sonos first launched the SYMFONISK line, they promised they’d follow up with a wireless remote control for the speakers. Now, they’re delivering on that promise.
Dutch publication, Tweakers, noticed the puck-shaped remote was listed on IKEA’s French website last week. The €14.99/$14.99 black remote features a finger-shaped indent on the top that allows users play, pause, skip tracks, and adjust the volume with the touch of a button. At 5 cm in diameter and just shy of 2 cm high, the SYMFONISK remote sits neatly on a desk or tabletop. IKEA also gives users the option of affixing the remote to a wall with the included magnetic mount.
With the remote, users can control the SYMFONISK speakers and other Sonos speakers from any room but they must also have the TRÅDFRI gateway and the IKEA Home Smart (TRÅDFRI) app. The TRÅDFRI gateway connects to a router and allows for total control of IKEA’s other smart home products including blinds, lights and switches. It’ll run consumers an extra £20/$35 if they don’t already own one. Since the SYMFONISK collection is controlled via the Sonos app, the SYMFONISK Music Remote will need to be assigned to specific speakers or speaker groups within the TRÅDFRI app.
For right now, the SYMFONISK remote is only available for in-store purchase in Sweden, and it’s expected to arrive in the UK and Europe by Oct. 1. North America availability is expected to follow shortly after.
