Meanwhile, Samsung has continued to simultaneously attack other CE markets, and deliver new, innovative products. In the past year, Samsung also dominated the smart phone market, garnering a 34.6 percent share versus Apple’s 17.8 percent. It also continued to add innovations like near field communications to its Galaxy S III phone, leapfrogging Apple’s iPhone 5 even before its introduction.
And the company has not been afraid to try new products. Its Galaxy Note, with a 5.3-inch screen, was greeted this year with skeptical reviews and consumers who doubted that a handset that large would work as a cell phone. The company sold millions within weeks, creating a new category of phablet phones and encouraging competitors such as HTC and LG to introduce similar models. Look for Samsung’s Galaxy 4G connected cameras using Android to inspire similar copycat products this fall. And as for that Apple judgment, expect more legal appeals and wrangling well into 2014. l
