Sony Targeting TV Line to Discount Retailers
Sony is getting ready to supply a special line of LCD flat-panel TVs to Target, Wal*Mart, and other discount retailers, CNET reported Monday. Details are unclear in regards to the products that will be available and for how long, but the promotion will begin in the next 60 days.
The sale is an effort by Sony to gain an advantage in the hyper-competitive LCD TV market.
In a media briefing reported on by CNET, Sony Electronics president Stan Glasgow and senior vice president of marketing Randy Waynick also stated that the Walkman brand will be relaunched this fall as a Bluetooth-capable product, that Sony has no plans to introduce a dual Blu-ray/HD DVD player, and that the company will move nearly exclusively into 1080p-resolution TVs, with LCD taking precedent over other flat-panel formats.
