Retailers Size Up the iPad
After the announcement, Garson at DatavVision, Schachter at Adorama and Manlove at Vann’s each were working to become part of Apple’s iPad distribution plan. They were hoping that Apple wouldn’t limit iPad distribution to only Apple retail stores, AT&T outlets or, even worse, only sell it through mass merchant Apple resellers.
Apple sold 8.7 million iPhones in last year's fourth quarter alone without broad distribution. With iPad, Manlove says, “I hope they don’t take those customers away from us from the specialty retailer channel."
Typically, Vann’s would be able to order new Apple product at launch, but with iPad Apple has strangely mum on its distribution plans. Still, Vann’s was ready to start accepting iPad pre-orders on Vanns.com if and when Apple gives them the go-ahead.
