InMotion Entertainment Group Celebrates 20 Years in Business
Looking at their present-day operations, it’s crazy to think that just 20 years ago this February, InMotion Entertainment Group was launched as an in-airport movie rental kiosk. But that’s exactly the case for the company, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this month as the largest U.S. airport-based electronics retailer. InMotion sits at number-56 on Dealerscope’s Top 101 CE Retailers list, and has been a staple on that list for the past seven years.
The first two InMotion stores, which opened as InMotion Pictures in Portland (2/11/1999) and Minneapolis (2/17/1999), began solely as movie rental locations. Shoppers were able to rent DVD players and DVDs. As the company noticed a shift in on-the-go consumers needs, InMotion evolved its offerings to include music, movies, and electronics retailing.
“We have achieved this milestone through the dedication and willingness to go the extra mile from every employee,” InMotion Entertainment Group President and CEO Jeremy Smith said in a statement. “We have additional store growth planned, are actively pursuing international locations, and are exploring additional travel retail opportunities.”
Along the way in its relatively brief history, InMotion has acquired other retailers in the space, including Altitunes, iTech, and Airport Wireless; they’ve unveiled more than six different store designs, and they’ve opened in numerous new U.S. markets. Most recently, the company was acquired by global retailer WH Smith in early December.
In all, InMotion operates 116 stores in 43 airports, employing nearly 800 staff.
“In 2019, we will celebrate InMotion past, present and future,” Eden Goldberg, VP of Marketing and Business Development of InMotion Entertainment Group, said in the statement. “We begin with local celebrations in the stores and in our corporate office: In February, we will distinguish our 20- year history at the annual Airport Experience Conference to celebrate with our colleagues throughout the airport industry. Our annual Las Vegas InMotion Summit for our product partners and store managers in April will commemorate our sales achievements and prepare for the future products we will carry.”
Having grown its portfolio well beyond the movie business, travelers will find that InMotion locations carry a curated selection of everything from headphones, to mobile power, to Bluetooth speakers, cameras, and other travel accessories.
