Mobile Phone Usage Gaining in Japan
The number of cellular and PHS handsets in use in Japan reached 50,518,000 at the end of July, surpassing the 50-million mark for the first time in history, according to the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications. The per-capita penetration rate is now 39.9 percent. At the current rate of growth, the number of mobile phone users may surpass the number of NTT telephone subscribers by the end of March 2000. As of late July, there were 44,808,000 cellular subscribers, an increase of 862,000 in one month. The number of PHS subscribers declined 47,000 to 5,710,000.
