Install Now- Are we happier?
Knowledge, information and cutting-edge discoveries can now be shared all over the world through the Internet. Medical science has allowed all of us to look forward to longer, healthier lives. Today, my grandmother no longer has to pump water, maintain kerosene lamps or put wood in her stove. Today, she lives in a nice retirement apartment with microprocessor-controlled heat and air conditioning, touch-controlled lighting and an emergency call system. This last Christmas, my wife and I bought her a new television. If I may speak for her, I think she would say that the world is fundamentally a better place.
I doubt that any of us would want to go back to a time before Novocain and air-conditioning. So, for most of us, I think we would also agree that the world is a better place.
Now, the first question: "Are we happier?" There is no question more subjective than asking about one's own happiness. I can only answer that for myself. When my wife and I gave my Grandmother that new television for Christmas, it made me happy.
