Managing your projects is as critical as managing your business

What does it take to transition from retailer to custom installer? The answer is quite complex. At its core, the key factors in determining whether you will be successful or not are: a) a fundamental shift in your mindset, b) how you structure your business and c) how you manage your projects. The first two issues, mindset and structure, have been discussed, written about and lectured over and over again. Whereas these are essential areas to address, nothing will ever happen (or be completed!) unless you establish a process for completing your contracts through effective project management.
Your over-the-counter transactions have now become PROJECTS. By pure definition, that means you will need a PROCESS to ensure everything in the chain of events occurs smoothly. From selling and ordering the right equipment and materials to walking through the completed installation with the customer, a structured process—and someone to manage it for every contract—will be necessary to guarantee timely completion and a happy client.
