With all the changes in our industry, a lot of the old rules don't apply. But loyalty and commitment and support still count and they're still two-way streets. Understanding each other's business goes a long way toward building valuable, long-term relationships. Despite some important differences in how A/V specialists and custom installers manage their inventory and evaluate their supplier relationships, there's a lot that both groups can learn from each other. The industry's leading trade associations—CEDIA, PARA and CEA—are excellent forums for that exchange. I'd like to see more manufacturers taking an active role in the knowledge-sharing and learning—doing more than just turning up for the trade shows. We need more manufacturers participating in the business management training of our industry, including learning, themselves, how to run a more responsive, channel-friendly business.
