Internet Cable Goes Retail
Looks like to there's no way around it, cable is coming to the Internet. Actually cable Internet isn't exactly new. Cable access has been available for some time, but the modems usually were leased from the access provider. Now, with cable modems soon to b e available from retailers, their presence and use should sky rocket in the next year.
The major benefits of cable modem access are speed and ease of connection. The speed is obvious, up to 100 times as fast as traditional phoneline modems. A download that would take 30 minutes with a 56K phone modem, would land in under 10 seconds with a 10Mbps cable modem. And connecting is easy because a cable modem is always-on just like cable television, so there's no slow dial-up process.
Data Over Cable Service Internet Specification (DOCSIS), a CableLabs certification which ensures that the product is compatible with cable providers, is enabling the retail availability of the modems.
