iSuppli Corp. is forecasting Car Rear Seat Entertainment (RSE) system sales will double by 2015, as the options for in-vehicle infotainment systems continue to increase. Worldwide sales are expected to increase from 3.1 million units in 2009 to 5.6 million units in 2015.
One reason for the increase is the change in the perception of in-vehicle entertainment. In the report, Ruthie Bloch, researcher for iSuppli's North American Automotive Service noted, "in the past, an RSE was usually found in a minivan and referred to-often dismissively-as 'rear seat babysitter.' Not anymore. In fact, RSE systems are showing up in all sorts of vehicles beyond just minivans."
Today, there are many options in addition to the more traditional factory-installed DVD player. RSE's are now including gaming systems, HD Radio, USB connectivity for MP3 and other devices, and live TV, while Wi-Fi is making even more technology possible.
