MO Device, Media Companies Target Copyright Protection
Japan's major manufacturers of 3.5-inch magneto-optical (MO) disk drives and MO media agreed to promote the use of a "Media ID" function aimed at protecting copyrighted digital content. Joining in the agreement are three MO drive manufacturersOlympus Optical Co., Konica Corporation and Fujitsu Limitedand five media companiesSony Corporation, Teijin, Tosoh Corporation, Hitachi Maxell and Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation. The proposed Media ID function adds a unique number to each 3.5-inch MO disk, which, when used in combination with applications incorporating the Media ID, allows protection of various kind of digital information. The eight cooperating companies will incorporate the Media ID function into their 3.5-inch disk drives and 230MB, 540MB, 640MB, and 1.3GB (GIGAMO) media. Previous types of MO disks can also be used in Media ID-compatible MO disk drives. The companies participating in the initiative plan to make the Media ID function compatible with the copyright protection function in Microsoft's Windows Millennium Edition.
