Killing It with Profits
SoundFX is in an interesting market when it comes to mobile electronics. On the coast of Delaware, its largest nearby city would be
Ocean City, Md. Surrounded by miles of beach coast, SoundFX’s business centers around
vacationers and families who migrate their during the
spring and summer months.
Therefore, SoundFX’s usual customers are also of a different mindset. They’re family vacationers looking for a vehicle for the vacation home. They may not have the time to get to SoundFX directly. Would you want to visit any store if you were anxious to get to the beach? So the company has decided to head them off at the pass and expedite its offerings directly to the car dealerships of the Delmarva peninsula.
SoundFX started with the same mission as most 12-volt companies. Great-sounding stereos and sweet-looking rides fueled their passion. But as the business landscape changed in mobile electronics, the industry was forced to adapt. Vendors and retailers—both new and old—who have kept pace with the changing technology remain even stronger today.
Brian Layton was a member of our own Dealerscope 40 under 40 Class of 2012. Layton, who is president of SoundFX, noted, “Benjamin Franklin stated, ‘When you are finished changing, you’re finished.’ Like most mobile electronics retailers, Sound FX has done work for car dealers throughout our history. But around 2010, we decided to focus on this segment even greater.” As an ambassador to the industry, Layton wants others to succeed, and he is sharing some of his secrets: “To empower your ‘change’ and drive your car dealership/expediting business growth, I will arm you with a
few simple thoughts that have fueled our success.”
The one mantra Layton and his team always come back to is: “Car dealerships are in the same business as you are. Selling vehicles, selling their service, and selling parts afford them the opportunity to be profitable. Taking care of their clients ensures their profitability.”
