Back in 2017, Kiwano turned some heads when it introduced a no-hands, self-balancing, one-wheeled scooter. After plenty of success with that product, the company is back with a sequel—this time a one-wheeled, self-balancing scooter that gives you something to hold onto. Beyond the addition of a legit handlebar, the $1,299 KO1+ rideable gives users extended range, more stability, and a smoother ride with a max speed of 12 miles per hour.
According to Kiwano, the KO1+ uses something called the Auto Deck Smart Control System to intuitively respond to the rider’s body movements. All the rider needs to do is step onto the KO1+ and tilt it forward to launch. They can then control the scooter with forward and backward body movements. Kiwano designed the scooter with a shock suspension system that maintains steadiness while riding, and also gives the KO1+ the ability to navigate some tougher terrains like grass and sand, which would normally limit other scooters.
Riders can also download a companion app for the scooter that offers another layer of personalization—and security. The app, which acts as a digital key for unlocking the scooter, has a number of customizable settings, including the ability to adjust the desired launch position, and switching between Novice and Pro riding modes depending on how experienced the rider is. Additionally, the scooter can be controlled with the touch of a button for hands-free repositioning.
With the premium price tag that the KO1+ carries, you’d expect it to would not only be an Uber-smart gadget, but a very-well constructed piece of machinery as well. Kiwano doesn’t skimp on either end of that equation. The KO1+ is built out of a combination of carbon fiber, Flexi poly-carbonate, and zinc alloy, which gives it that premium-level construction, but also makes it extremely durable. The adjustable foot pegs have anti-slip, ergonomic grips for added stability. And an LCD display located between the handles gives the rider quick-glance access to important information like battery level, speed, and the selected rider mode.
Kiwano sells the KO1+ through their online store as well as in select retail locations. Riders have the option of picking an urban or sport model, which impacts the type of tire that the scooter will ship with—either road or all-terrain, respectively. Other accessories are available for the scooters as well, including GoPro mounts, chargers, and a Kiwano helmet.
