Legal Update on Mobile Phone Usage
What does all this mean to retailers? It means its high time to start peddling those hands-free accessories. Of those 115 million American cell phone users, only 10 percent use hands-free accessories. Verizon, the nation's largest wireless service provider, has been pushing hands-free accessories on their customers since 1999. In light of recent proposed legislation, many manufacturers and retailers are now jumping on the bandwagon.
"Being a good corporate citizen, its the right thing to do," said Don Carroll, vice president of marketing for RadioShack's Connecting People Business Unit, which began an initiative in July to get cell phone users on the hands-free tip.
Hands-free accessories not only make cell phone use in the car safer, but legal too. But its the safety aspect, Carroll says, that should be emphasized when making the sale. "Don't tell them they have to get it, because its the law," he cautions. "Try a more educational approach to the sale."
