Leica’s Ultra-High-End S3 Brings Benchmark Features
Leica Camera has announced the newest addition to its S-System family: the Leica S3 flagship medium-format DSLR. The company says it brings new benchmark features geared toward a streamlined, professional workflow in high-end photography and videography.
The Leica S3 includes first-of-a-kind capabilities and improvements including video performance that allows users to record videos in cine-4K resolution across the entire width of the sensor. Further, the S3 bumps up resolution from 37.5 to 64 megapixels – maximizing the potential of Leica S-Lenses.
The new, exclusive sensor offers a 71 percent increase in resolution from its predecessor, with a dynamic range of 15 f-stops and a maximum ISO sensitivity of 50000. The S3’s ProFormat sensor dimensions of 30mm x 45mm match the conventional 3:2 aspect ratio of 35mm full-frame format, but with a 56 percent larger sensor area to enable a high capacity for large-scale printing and cropping heavily when needed, says the company.
Besides recording videos in cine-4K resolution across the entire width of the sensor, the camera offers Full HD 1080p medium-format recording with higher frame rate options that are also available for fast action or slow motion. The Leica S3 also doubles as a professional cinema camera with optional connectivity to external recorders and microphones.
A strength of DSLR cameras remains the power and thermal savings by using a traditional optical viewfinder. The S3’s large sensor is kept cool by not requiring an always-on Live View feed, reducing the risk of excess noise. The Leica S3 also boasts a battery life of over 1,000 shots on a single charge.
Leica’s Maestro II processor and a 2GB buffer memory make for a smooth workflow, easing the handling of data recorded by such a high-megapixel sensor. Tethered shooting to a computer is also possible with either the standalone Leica Image Shuttle app or the Adobe Lightroom Classic plug-in, available for both Windows and MacOS. Additionally, a mobile workflow solution is also on tap with the S3’s native WLAN connectivity to sync up with the Leica FOTOS 2.0 app on iOS, iPadOS and Android. Built-in GPS rounds out the tech package with automatic geotagging of coordinates for every photo taken.
Another mainstay of the S-System is the central shutter feature, available as an alternative option for six lenses of the S-System portfolio, permitting high-speed flash synchronization. This opens up greater flexibility for creative photography when working with studio flash systems or mixing both bright ambient light with smaller remote strobes.
The camera is ruggedly built and features weather sealing. And built to the same accord of the camera, Leica S-Lenses are designed to be futureproof, says the company.
The Leica S3 is available for shipping and available for pre-order at Leica stores, boutiques, and dealers for $18,995.
